I love country music
My show is called La Grange and is on Sundays 12-2pm. I’ve missed a couple of weeks as I’ve got hepatitis - luckily not one of the really shitty kinds.
Anyway, I’m back now and I’m dedicated to bringing you the very best in life affirming, soulful, spirited country music. Which I think I’ve already mentioned that I love.
A lot of people are reticent to dip their toes into the waters of country. There are good reasons for this. A lot of country music that bothers the charts (especially in the US) is total shite. Dumb poster boys styled as shiny rednecks with brand new cowboy hats, doing their best to sound like Garth Brooks. That kind of country music is possibly the worst kind of music on the planet.
I also have a slight problem with a lot of Ryan Adams influenced alt country. It’s just dreary. It’s miserable and it shows no hope. It drags you down. I have nothing wrong with beautiful sad songs, but some indie kid playing an acoustic guitar and whinging is just no fun for anyone. I think a lot of people are put off country by that kind of stuff too, as it’s quite trendy in some circles so it’s all they get to hear. I’d stick Iron & Wine in this category too. Don’t put yourself through that kind of stuff. You don’t deserve it and life is too short.
But there co-exists the kind of country music that I play on my show - and that is the polar opposite. Music by the likes of Doug Sahm, Hasil Adkins, Roger Miller, Willie Nelson, Langhorne Slim, Wiskey Biscuit and the like. It’s fucking ACE! It makes you want to slam a tequila, kiss the person next to you and do your best to approximate a country jig that’s somewhere embedded in your head from old episodes of the Dukes of Hazzard or Smokey and the Bandit.
Listen to my show and I’m sure you’ll agree. And if you don’t, maybe you might find something over on www.artrocker.com, which is a contemporary rock n roll website which I edit.
By the way, I’m biased but I think FleetFm is possibly the best radio station in the world. The shows I listen to at work are awesome and it’s an assett that New Zealand should be proud of.
